I will never forget my first class at the Law Center. It was 1L Contracts with the legend himself, Raymond T. Nimmer. I think I can speak for everyone in that class when I say that if we weren’t already nervous walking in, we definitely were walking out. However, it didn’t take long to realize that behind the sharp intellect and wit was a genuinely kind, caring man.
I went on to take every course that Professor Nimmer taught at the Law Center. Even more importantly, for me, was having the opportunity to work closely with Ray as a research assistant on some of his final publications. I was lucky enough to get to know Ray on both a professional and personal level. Whether it was spirited conversations at the campus bar or extended lunches at one of his favorite high-end restaurants—always in the back-corner booth, of course—Ray grew from a mentor to a friend.
I am not alone in these experiences. As a professor, Ray truly cared about his students in a remarkable way. He was always available. His door was always open. If a student was having problems, either in his course or otherwise, Ray was there to talk. He always encouraged his students to do what was best for themselves; not to let other people or outside expectations define
you—to be yourself no matter what. And he lived those ideals in his everyday life.
Ray proved that you didn’t have to be a cookie-cutter lawyer to be successful. He would master one area of the law, then move on to the next with ease. By challenging his students in and out of the classroom, Ray made us better as students and future attorneys. He exemplified what it meant to be hard-working, while still taking the time to enjoy the pleasures of life. Ray really was a renaissance man and a role model for many.
My experiences, though special, are not unique. I know there are hundreds of students around the world who would say the same things and share similar memories and emotions. That’s what made him such a special person. Apparent by the multiple memorials held in his honor, the sheer number of attendees of all ages, the innumerous stories shared, and the heartfelt emotions displayed, Ray Nimmer had a big impact on a lot of people’s lives in more ways than I think he even knew. And, for that, we truly mourn the passing of a great man. We all miss you, Ray.
